- Brief:Next-Gen Train Interiors Challenge The RSSB and Network Rail funded Future Railway Programme, in conjunction with the Department for Transport invited architects, engineers and designers worldwide to propose new design solutions to improve passenger rolling stock across the UK rail network. Project description: Internal expansion - Maximising comfort Founding additional usable areas in strictly defined space is always challenging task which required unusual solution. As the envelope of the rolling stock is a fixed by exterior outline how more space can be created? How more passenger may be allow to travel with adequate comfort and the most in democratic way with equal right for space. The answer are adaptability and flexibility, two words with help designer to solved problems in many fields of human life. The challenge is simple to find a unique, adaptable seat concept idea which allow to create various seat arrangements and reconfigured it 'on the move' to address the needs. The proposed concept is a golden solution with can span interior demands from a first class luxury long distance travelling experience to pick time short distance commuter world. The proposed concept combine the best train interior practices and ideas from short distance tube-like arrangement to first class long distance train, and present unique solution which can be easily modify to make this arrangements inside the same space of the same rolling stock. The innovative seat support allow to twist the chairs in pairs and create various configurations. The chairs have three basic positions: - Parallel to the main train axis – maximising standing space for the short, pick time, commuters, - Perpendicular position – standard, universal position for short and long off pick travelling, - 30 degrees angle – business, first class space with second chair turned into table and additional space for luggage. Using these three options the space can expand and confined. All can be combined in a single rolling stock with many options of the configuration. The flexible design will enhance the passenger experience. It will provide opportunity for efficient access and egress allowing also to minimising dwell times, by simple adjusting configuration to the number of passengers and widening the circulation. The interior design can be reconfigured 'on-the-move' by members of the travelling public and gradually address the needs or be reconfigured by the operator during vehicle turnaround and fixed or partially fixed, using simple locking system. The concept can be develop with association elements as new future train interior or adopted for existing interior of typical existing GB rolling stock. Competiton website in here...
